Quality Assurance Policy

The Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (TBB) is located in Larissa and belongs to the School of Health Sciences together with the Departments of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Nursing, Public and Integrated Health, and Physiotherapy of the University of Thessaly. TBB was established by Presidential Decree No. 82 published in the Government Gazette 72/10-3-2000. According to the founding Presidential Decree, the mission of TBB is "The cultivation and promotion, through teaching and research, of the science of biochemistry and biotechnology, with particular emphasis on the areas related to the chemistry of living systems, the metabolism of components and foods of living organisms, energy metabolism, the analysis of components of living systems, recombinant DNA technology, the technology of enzyme applications as catalysts and the technology of producing useful products from living organisms, and the training of scientists capable of studying, researching, understanding and applying modern methods for the development of biochemistry in the field of enzymology and biotechnology in the fields of enzyme engineering and recombinant DNA technology, namely the integration of genes of one organism into the genome of another organism." Graduates are engaged in the study, research, understanding and application of modern methods for the development of biochemistry and biotechnology in the more specialized scientific fields specified above.
The TBB of the University of Thessaloniki is committed to implementing a quality assurance policy that supports its academic profile as a Department that offers comprehensive training for Biochemists-Biotechnologists through high-level first, second and third cycle study programs, with an emphasis on modern computational skills and laboratory methods. The TBB quality assurance policy ensures the orientation of all study programs it offers and promotes the education of Biochemists-Biotechnologists so that they can meet the demands and challenges of the Greek, European and International labor market as well as research and development. TBB promotes the purpose and implements its strategic objectives within the framework of the University of Thessaloniki’s Strategic Planning, determines the means and methods of achieving them and implements appropriate quality procedures to ensure its continuous improvement.
TBB’s quality assurance policy is aligned with the University of Thessaloniki’s quality assurance policy, which aims to develop a quality culture within the academic community so that it can fulfil its objectives, through education, excellence, the promotion of knowledge and innovation in research. It follows the principles and guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area, in accordance with the European Union Declaration on Quality Assurance in Higher Education of Helsinki (ENQUA 2009).
In order to implement the quality assurance policy, TBB is committed to implementing quality procedures that will demonstrate:
1. the appropriateness of the structure and organization of the first,
second and third cycle study programmes
2. the pursuit of learning outcomes and qualifications in accordance with the European and the
National Qualifications Framework for Higher Education Levels 6, 7 and 8 respectively
3. the promotion of the quality and effectiveness of teaching work in
the study programmes of all cycles
4. the appropriateness of the qualifications of the teaching staff
5. the drafting, implementation and review of specific annual quality objectives for the improvement of
the study programmes of all cycles
6. the level of demand for the acquired qualifications of graduates in the labour market
7. the quality of support services, such as administrative services, libraries
and student care services for all study programmes
8. ensuring the completeness and integrity of student assessment processes
9. promoting the quality and quantity of the research work of TBB members
10. linking teaching with research
11. efficient use of financial resources that may come from tuition
12. conducting the annual internal evaluation and review of the quality assurance system for study programs in collaboration with the Internal Evaluation Team (OMEA) and the Quality Assurance Unit (MODIP) of the University of Thrace.
The implementation of the quality assurance policy is supported by the development of reliable databases from which data is drawn for the calculation of Quality Indicators, and electronic services such as the Electronic Secretariat system, which are supervised by the University of Thrace's Computerization Directorate. These services are gradually being expanded to include personnel matters, financial management, etc. with the support of the University of Thrace.
