COURSE OBJECTIVES

The objective of the TOXICOLOGY graduate program of the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, University of Thessaly, is to train high-quality scientists in applied toxicology with a heightened respect for the environment and protection of the health of workers and consumers. It is the first attempt in Greece to offer toxicology studies at the postgraduate level. Graduates will develop a broad range of skills, knowledge and experience required for successful careers in all sectors of the chemical industry, laboratories engaged in the analysis and biological activity of toxic substances, the food industry and the analysis of genetic material for forensic purposes. They will receive a comprehensive knowledge of the European educational framework in the field which will be valuable in the development of the industrial sector as well as in specialized laboratories and services.

The present MSC program is set under the auspices of the Hellenic Society of Toxicology. Ιn addition, this master programme provides some of the minimum requirements in education for European Registered Toxicologist (ERT). Therefore, graduates could apply in due time for the title of ERT, depending on the rules and regulations of EUROTOX and the HST.

The ERT qualification enables them to conduct their work as experts within the EU at different levels (courts, public and private organizations). This is of importance for our country as over 4000 legal proceedings take place here every year concerning the environment, forensics and infringements in the area of food, etc. With few exceptions, no official ERT experts are present within the country.

Classes will take place on Saturdays and Sundays so that students who work during the week can also attend. The course lasts three semesters (two semesters of classes and preparation of a thesis / dissertation in the 3rd semester).
